How To Make A Lunch Bag
Making your own lunch bag to show off your DIY talent has never been easier. Here is how to create your unique bag.
Materials Needed
- Fabric of your choice (approximately 1/2 yard)
- Cotton fabric of a different color (to make the inner layer)
- Woven interlining (preferably iron-on)
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Straight pins/straps
- Zipper for closure
- Iron
- Decorative elements (optional)
How To Do It
Step 1: Make the side panels of the bag
- Take one rectangle piece of fabric and one smaller rectangle piece of woven interfacing (about half an inch smaller).
- Place the interlining on the wrong (back) side of the fabric and iron them so they can stick to one another. These will make your side panels stiffer.
Step 2: Make the handles
- On the side panels, measure from the side edge a distance of 5 cm (2 inches) and mark it.
- Do this with the opposite edge. This will be where you place the strap to make the handles.
- Fold the edge inward, on top of the straps, and sew them together.
- To make the inner layer for your bag, prepare 2 pieces of cotton fabric. Measure from the side edge a distance of 5 cm (2 inches) and mark it.
- Do this with the opposite edge, fold the edge, and sew.
Step 3: Make the closure panel
- Prepare 2 pieces of fabric with a measure of 35×8 cm (13.7×3 inches). Place the woven interlining on the back side and iron them together.
- Take 2 pieces of cotton fabric with the same measure as the fabric above to make the inner layer and 1 zipper of the same length.
- Place the pieces in this order: the cotton fabric at the bottom, then the zipper, then the fabric panel (back side up). Notice to align them at the edge, not at the middle. Sew all the items together.
- Now place the sewed item on the remaining cotton fabric and then the remaining fabric panel (back side up). Align them at the edge, sew them together, and you have created the closure panel.
Step 4: Attach the closure
- Take two small square pieces of fabric (measuring 5×5 cm or 2×2 inches). Fold the sides to the middle, place them at both ends on the closure edge (at the zipper) and sew.
- Take 2 pieces of fabric measuring 15×10 cm or 6×4 inches and iron the woven interfacing on their wrong side.
- Take 2 pieces of cotton fabric of the same size, place underneath the closure panel and the 2 15×10-cm pieces on top with the flip side facing upward. Then sew. This will be the sides of your bag.
Step 5: Attach the closure piece with the handle pieces
- Fold the closure piece in half, and mark it at the center. Do the same with the handle pieces.
- Place the pieces in this order: the handle pieces on top, then the closure piece, and the cotton pieces at the bottom so that the center points are aligned. Sew them together at all corners.
- Turn the bag right side out.
Step 6: Make the bottom
- Prepare another piece of woven interfacing with the measure of 24×16 cm (9.5×6 inches). To create round corners on this piece, place a marking circle with a diameter of 6cm (about 2.3 inches) at the corner and cut the edge following the curve.
- Take a fabric piece of 26×18 cm (10×7 inches), turn to its flip side, and iron the woven interlining piece on top. Then, cut the fabric corners following the curved woven interfacing.
- Take another cotton fabric piece of the same size, place it under the other two parts, make the round edge, and sew. This will be the bottom panel of your lunch bag.
- Turn the bag inside out, and sew the bottom panel to the bag.
- Clip straps at the edge of the bottom and sew it together with the bag. This way, the bottom will be fixed, strengthening and securing your creation.
Step 7: Add decorative elements (optional)
- If desired, you can add decorative elements to personalize your lunch bag.
- Consider sewing on patches, appliques, or embroidery to make it unique.
